I really love your approach and share the philosophy that focusing on shifting a dog's emotional state is key to behavioural change, rather than focusing on correcting behaviours.

I also use the water metaphor, and often get my clients to think of their dog's triggers as 'candles' underneath the pot of water. Each time their dog experiences arousal a candle is lit. The water keeps getting warmer until it boils over. Our work together then becomes about blowing out the candles :)
